Assessing to Grow: The Purpose of Second-Term English Exams

As the school year progresses, an important milestone approaches: second-term assessments. Often, the word “exam” can cause nerves or even concern. At l’Acadèmia A+ de Reus, however, we understand assessment in a different way—as a tool for growth.

The Exam as a Snapshot of the Learning Process

Exams are not an end in themselves. They are a snapshot of a student’s current stage. They allow us to clearly see what has been consolidated, what still needs reinforcement, and how each learner is evolving within their individual learning journey.

During the second term, exams are organized into two separate sessions:

  • Day 1: Listening and Writing

  • Day 2: Reading and Use of English

This structure enables us to assess all language skills in a balanced way: listening comprehension, written production, reading comprehension, and grammatical accuracy. It is not simply about knowing rules, but about being able to apply them meaningfully in context.

Assessing to Guide, Not to Label

One of the greatest misconceptions in education is viewing exams as labels. A grade does not define a student; it defines a specific moment in their learning process.

For us, assessment is a guiding tool. It helps us refine our methodology, reinforce specific content, and better support each student according to their needs. It is a starting point for continued progress with greater awareness.

In higher courses—particularly second-year groups at levels such as B1, B2 or C1—some parts of the exam are conducted as official exam simulations. The goal is clear: to familiarize students with the real exam structure, help them manage time effectively, and reduce anxiety about the unknown. Preparation is not only academic; it is also emotional.

The Value of Personalized Feedback

At the end of the term, families receive a report card including:

  • Exam results

  • Overall course marks to date

  • Personalized teacher comments

These comments are essential. They allow us to go beyond numbers and explain each student’s progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. We believe in assessment that communicates, supports, and builds confidence.

Learning That Truly Matters

Our commitment is clear: we want students to learn in a meaningful and lasting way. We work with small groups, provide close follow-up, and implement a methodology that combines solid structure with real communicative practice.

Assessment is part of this process. It is not pressure; it is responsibility. It is not fear; it is opportunity.

When learning is solid, exams stop being a threat and become a confirmation of the progress achieved.

At l’Acadèmia A+ de Reus, we continue working every day towards this goal: real progress, excellence, and confidence.
